NEWSLETTER | November 2019

In November we held our event «Hope in a Dress» - a fantastic success!

Building the Cathedral in the spirit of tradition

The latest part of our course in traditional crafts and logging was held from 11-17th November with the focus on post and beam construction. There were 15 participants from all over the country, including Victoria, a student from Arna near Bergen, who is studying building and construction at High School.

In the course of these days, we managed to finish the posts and the framework in spite of the rain, sleet and snow. These people certainly are a hardbitten bunch! Take a look at our gallery for more pictures.

Andreas in action!

It was good to have a young, motivated building apprentice in the group!

Our all-star team of hardbitten course participants, all well pleased.

A TRUE BONANZA!

Hope, dresses, stories, expectations, recycling, joy, queues - auctions. What more can you say about Saturday’s party in the auditorium than that it was «a bonanza»!. There was a queue outside the auditorium when the dress sale began. Dresses flew between the sales racks like migrating birds - until they finally settled on a new owner. It was a joy to watch!

The auction was a chaos of hope and joy and brought in no less than (NOK) kr. 92 000 for the Hope Cathedral!

A meeting in friendship

It was a pleasure to hold a Buddhist meditation meeting with Lokkutara Vihara Skiptvedt woodland monastery at Phønixbrygga this month. This was a meeting that really made an impression and you can be sure that there will more such meetings during the spring.

Prayer for hope and the ocean

On Sunday 24th November we gathered in prayer for hope and the ocean at the Hope Cathedral building site. There was singing, prayer/meditation and silence - and this is something we will be repeating on the last Sunday of every month in the months ahead. The next time will be on 29th December. So if you can leave your Christmas treats behind and enjoy a moment of quiet at Isegran.

Welcome! Hope and the ocean belong to us all

Will you join us? Dress up warm and bring a blanket. Your thoughts and deeds make a difference!

Hope in a bottle

Representatives from the pupils’ council at Nøkleby school came to the site to present a gift to the Hope Cathedral. The pupils’ sustainability project made kr. 3194 by collecting bottles for recycling, and they donated this to the Hope Cathedral. Heart-warming!

You can see a video of their wonderful presentation here. (Youtube)

Pupils gathered on the barge.

Look at this lovely jar the pupils made! With the Hope Cathedral logo and «ocean-coloured paper» on the top. Heart-warming stuff…

A trial casting of ocean plastic is underway!

The Fredrikstad-based firm Biobe AS develops and produces both thermoplastics and thermoset plastics. They are helping us with a trial casting!

The plastic is cleansed and washed before being ground to a granulate!

We are well pleased with the first trial casting of ocean plastic.

This is some of the plastic we have collected. 4 tons in all! Is it enough, do you think?

Christmas gifts for your employees?

A reminder that the Hope Cathedral offers 3 unique gifts:

  • Bee cathedrals in solid pine.

  • Chopping boards in sustainable oak

  • Environmentally-friendly tote bags in strong cotton

Find info here about all the products, incl. prices.

A bee cathedral is a little house for single bees, who help create a fertile environment. We need the bees, and now they need us!

Hope Cathedral is an interfaith and sustainable art project. We’re building a cathedral with a wooden construction inspired by traditional Norwegian stave churches and blocks made out of plastic we have found in the sea. The cathedral becomes proof that we can transform something bad into something good - and is a groundbreaking meeting point between world heritage and modern art, between people across age, nationality and faith. Hope Cathedral will be a place for common effort in a world where we may feel isolated from others.
