The roof is taking shape

In November we spent time finding the right look and colour scheme for the roof. With good help from artist Hanna A. Høiness, we have travelled through the wonderful and complex world of colours, and ended up with the right palette for the cathedral We have had many epiphanies during the casting process, when we have seen what a wide range of colours we can create out of green, blue, red and yellow fish boxes. Now just over four thousand tiles have been cast from just over a thousand boxes. Thanks to Biobe who have let us have a "mixing factory" in their production hall and to Handelens Miljøfond who have made it financially possible.

A gift from Vispen kindergarten

To our surprise, a small delegation of children from Vispen kindergarten turned up. The children had sold cinnamon buns for the benefit of the Hope Cathedral and #motplastihavet. The gift of NOK 315 was solemnly handed over, and we were given permission to spend them on whatever we wanted. Such campaigns help plant important values in the children and spread true joy to those of us involved in the project.

Digital Christmas market

Our clever gang of volunteers has produced a number of Christmas items that we sell via Facebook in addition to products such as Eikefjøla [the oak board] and bee cathedrals. All the proceeds go to financing the project. We hope many people buy Christmas presents from the Hope Cathedral this year. Go to Facebook and search for: Digitalt Julemarked på Håpets katedral

Decorating the construction site for Christmas

We are on the go all week, in spite of covid-19. We are outdoors and there is plenty of space. In November, we visited Nordre Veum and fetched some spruce sprigs to make fragrant garlands out of that we will decorate the construction site with. Many people make the trip to Isegran at weekends and holidays, so we have to make the Hope Cathedral a nice place to visit.

The Inauguration of the Hope Cathedral

The official inauguration of the Cathedral of Hope is set to take place on Saturday 5 June 2021. The day will be marked with invited guests and an exciting program. On Sunday 6 June, we will celebrate Creation Day at the Hope Cathedral.

The way forward

The planned input meeting on 10.11 was cancelled due to corona restrictions. As many as 63 people had expressed their interest in the meeting in the Library Hall. Instead of meeting, participants were encouraged to submit written input concerning the way forward for the Hope Cathedral. A total of fifteen good suggestions were submitted. Everything has now been read and assessed, and will be included in the work of clarifying what form the establishment and operation phase of the project will take. Many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to submit input.

Prayer for hope and the sea

True to tradition, we meet on the last Sunday of the month at 17 - 17.30 at the Hope Cathedral for a silent prayer and reflection on hope and the sea.

The Hope Cathedral is an inter-faith and sustainable art project based in Fredrikstad. We are building a 120 m2 barge of wood which will support the Hope Cathedral. The framework is inspired by stave churches, while the 300 m2 roof will be built as an innovative project using plastic from the ocean. The cathedral will be a symbol of hope built through cooperation. The project is under the leadership of Borg Diocese. Both the process and the finished cathedral is open to all.
