Plum jam and voluntary work

This autumn started with sunshine and plum jam. At the first volunteer session of the season, Ingvill arrived with a waffle press and homemade jam, to the delight of eager participants. The sessions will continue until Christmas and will be mostly focused the roof of the cathedral. All the plastic that has been cleared from beaches and shorelines over the past two years, and which has been transformed into different coloured granules, will go to make the world's first cathedral roof of sea plastic. This is going to be so exciting! A new workshop in traditional crafts will also be arranged sometime in the autumn, so follow us on Facebook and our website if you’re interested in taking part. The colour scheme and design of the roof

The work of defining the colours and design of the roof is well underway. Artistic director Solveig draws inspiration both from nature and from helping hands. Artist Hanna Høyness (pictured) is one of those who have assisted in the process. The roof is a full 300 m2 and the aim is to transform bad to good, by creating a magnificent "painting" made of sea plastic.

Grinding the plastic continues

The job of processing approximately 2 tonnes of marine plastic still remains before we can start casting. The crew at Biobe that volunteered for sawing and grinding have become experienced industrial workers, skilled in their use of tools and machines. The in-joke is that when this is over we’ll start our own company recycling sea plastic. In the picture we see Dag Skottene, Grete Ileby and Lisa Bjerke.

Cooperation with Fredrik II Upper Secondary School

This school year, a class from the Sustainability and Innovation course of study at Fredrik II will be following the Hope Cathedral. Through excursions and lectures, they will get to know the process of "transforming bad to good" which is central to the Hope Cathedral’s vision and which defines how we should work with the plastic that has gone astray. Fredrik II has an exciting collaboration with Science Education for Action and Engagement towards Sustainability (SEAS). This is a H2020 research project lasting 3 years under the  project management of the Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS), UiO. It also means that the Hope Cathedral's involvement of external parties in the implementation of the project will be followed and documented, which we think is very exciting.

Prayers for hope and the ocean

Every last Sunday of the month we invite one and all to a half-hour of prayer for hope and the ocean. The gatherings are led by volunteers and each time there is a volunteer who sings one or two songs. The last Sundays in August were led by Grete Ringdal, while Marit Heitmann sang two beautiful songs. Just as we were gathering, the sky opened up and the rain poured down, so the congregation moved into the "laftebua". Thanks to Grete and Marit!

The Hope Cathedral is an inter-faith and sustainable art project based in Fredrikstad. We are building a 120 m2 barge of wood which will support the Hope Cathedral. The framework is inspired by stave churches, while the 300 m2 roof will be built as an innovative project using plastic from the ocean. The cathedral will be a symbol of hope built through cooperation. The project is under the leadership of Borg Diocese. Both the process and the finished cathedral is open to all.
